Hey! Are you here ‘cos you’re looking at getting married at Captains Wood Barn?
As someone who has photographed a few weddings here as well as enjoying the venue as a bridesmaid I’ve got all the inside scoop to share with you!
Here’s all you need to know about the venue:
Captains Wood Barn is located in Great Totham, Maldon and is only 10 minutes away from the A12 meaning it’s super easy to get to from London, Suffolk or further afield.
It’s a beautiful dry hire venue nestled in woodland and is exclusively yours for the weekend. With a modern yet rustic feel to the barn it’s the perfect blank canvas to truly make your own. Outside the barn is still covered providing perfect shade on a sunny day, or an alternative ceremony area should it happen to rain so there are plenty of options for all scenarios.
The grounds have a private woodland ceremony area reached by a pathway through the trees and some very magical wooden hoops, a wildflower meadow that leads to a huge garden area with ponds perfect for your drinks reception and lots of gorgeous photo backdrops.

I’m based in Colchester so I’m lucky to have an epic venue like Captains Wood Barn practically on my door step!
My style of photography is super informal, relaxed and full of colour which suits CWB so well. You’ll likely find me chatting with your nan when I’m not taking candids of everyone enjoying the day.
If you want someone to document the day with a few epic portraits of the two of you sprinkled in to the mix then I’m your girl.
USEFUL TIPS
Captains Wood Barn is a ‘dry hire’ venue - this means that you are hiring a blank canvas and have the freedom to hire in all the suppliers YOU want. You’re not restricted to a select few caterers like some venues so you can have BBQ, paella, pizza trucks… the possibilities are endless. You can also have an ice cream van drive right to the barn to serve your guests an afternoon treat!
You get the venue from Friday - Sunday so you can spend Friday decorating the barn and grounds in your unique style to really add your personality to your day and come back on Sunday to pack away meaning you have your whole wedding day to enjoy without the stresses of putting things up/clearing up.
The venue itself isn’t licensed for wedding ceremonies, but all this means is that you get to hire an epic celebrant or get a friend/family member to preform a totally unique ceremony and then you can go to a registry office before the day and do the ‘legal paper signing’ part.
